Cumann na mBunscol County Camogie Champions 2017

On a wet, windy Wednesday – June 7th 2017 to be precise – Lisaniskey NS competed with Ballymurray NS in the A County camogie final in Four Roads. With a great crowd supporting both sides, the stage was set for an epic struggle. The Ballymurray girls started impressively, and scored an early goal, despite a good initial save from goalie Rachel McGann. Lisaniskey responded with a point from a free by Hazel Kelly, before a Ballymurray 45 sailed over all the defenders heads to nestle in the back of the net, leaving us 5 points behind. Another point from Erin McDermott reduced the deficit, until just before half time, Hazel launched a free from distance that hit the back of the net to leave us just a point behind. Our backs were defending heroically, by necessity, as we were under severe pressure, while our forwards came so close scoring on a number of occasions – Jenny Kenny denied a goal by the Ballymurray goalie, as was Chloe McNamara.

In the second half, a tactical substitution made a big difference. Anna Hussey came on in forwards, and scored 2 goals, handpassing the ball into net on both occasions. At the other end, Rachel McGann was similarly beaten, only for the ref to give a free out as the ball had been thrown. Two pointed frees kept Ballymurray in touch, and the difference was only a goal. The last 10 minutes were agonising for players and supporters alike, but when the final whistle was blown, the relief was palpable and the joy was tangible. Cue cheers, applause, hugs and back slapping – and that was only Mr Fallon and Mr Dervan!!

In her acceptance speech, Captain Jenny Kenny thanked the supporters, the referee and the Ballymurray team for such a great game. All that was left then was the victory cavalcade, followed by a “healthy” celebration in Supermacs! Check out the photos below.
