Sport in Lisaniskey

Our school is situated in the parish of Oran, and most of the children who attend play Gaelic Games for Oran. Lisaniskey NS take part in lots of different sports competitions, from the Cumann na mBunscol Hurling, Camogie, Gaelic Football and Ladies’ Football competitions, to the 7 a side soccer competition – 6 a side for girls- and the FAI Schools 5 a side. We also take part in the various Go Games Blitzes organised by our Football and Hurling coaches, and we’ve been known to go to Tag Rugby days in Creggs.

We have different degrees of success each year, but in 2012 we did very well. We qualified out of our group in the Boys’ football, before losing out to Ballymurray NS, the eventual winners. In hurling we got to the Div. 3 final, where we had a ding dong battle against Tisrara NS, before we ran out winners after a very tight game.

Our boys 5 a side soccer team made it through to the Finals day of the FAI Schools competition, but we narrowly missed out on making it through to the actual final, losing out to the eventual winners – and reigning champions, Tarmon NS, but only on penalties after extra time. Our 7 a side team were runners up in the Shield competition, despite a valiant display against Roxboro NS.

Darragh Walsh, from 6th class was crowned the GAA Football Skills winner.

Our girls teams were less successful, in all sports, but we had great fun, and, it is all about taking part, after all!!

Last year, in 2013, we had a phenomenal year, winning practically everything we entered. Look at this for a list of successes:

FAI Schools Aviva Health 5 a side Roscommon Boys’ champions
FAI Schools Aviva Health 5 a side Connaught Boys’ champions, meaning we got to play in the Avivia Stadium!! Where we came 3rd.
Roscommon 7 a side 3-4 teacher soccer champions
Cumann na mBunscol Hurling “B” Champions
Cumann na mBunscol 3-4 teacher Football champions
Cumann na mBunscol camogie Div 4 runners up

Ciarán Lawless, from 6th class, emulated Darragh Walsh from 2012 and was crowned the GAA Football Skills winner, with a perfect 100 out of 100 score.

Last Spring, we took part in a Tag/Touch rugby blitz in Creggs rugby club, which was really enjoyable, especially because it was a wet day, and we got soaked and plastered, and we got no homework!

Every year we travel to Creggs for the Mark Fitzmaurice Cup, a tournament organised by Mr Dowd, the Principal in Creggs. It’s always a great day, no matter whether we win or not. The boys play Gaelic football, the girls play soccer matches and the 3rd and 4th classes play soccer and basketball. This wasn’t held in the school year 2012/2013, but it went ahead in October 2013, and we emerged victorious, beating Ballaghlea in the final. In a curious twist of fate, the only other time we won this, was in 2010, when we also beat Ballaghlea in the final!

For the last 3 or 4 years, we have taken part in a Futsal competition organised by Adrian Carberry, the FAI Development Officer for County Roscommon. This has become a blitz for boys and girls from 3rd and 4th classes, and over the last 2 years we have improved, to the stage where we were the County runners up last year.
For the last 2 years, we have arranged exchanges with Tarmon NS outside Castlerea, where we spend the day together, playing matches, doing quizzes, playing games, making new friends and having lots of fun. These days are great!
